What Is the Montessori Casa Program?
The Casa program—Italian for “house” or “home”—is the cornerstone of early childhood Montessori education. Developed by Dr. Maria Montessori over a century ago, the Casa program serves children between approximately 2½ and 6 years of age, a period that Montessori identified as critical for the development of independence, concentration, coordination, and a lasting love of learning.
At Montessori for Children in Toronto, our Casa classrooms are mixed-age environments where younger children learn by observing older peers and older children reinforce their knowledge through mentorship. This multi-age structure creates a sense of family and community that is central to the Montessori approach and is something that parents consistently describe as one of the most valuable aspects of our school.
Our AMI Montessori Curriculum in Toronto
Our curriculum is built around the five core areas of the AMI Montessori Casa program. Each area is designed to develop specific skills while nurturing the whole child. All lessons are presented using authentic Montessori materials on low, open shelves that children can access freely, encouraging independence from the very start.
Practical Life
Practical life activities are the foundation of our Montessori program. Activities like pouring, polishing, sweeping, cutting, and tying help children develop fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, concentration, and the ability to complete a task from start to finish. These skills form the groundwork for all academic learning that follows. At our Toronto Montessori preschool, practical life work also includes exercises in grace and courtesy that teach children how to interact respectfully with others.
Sensorial
The sensorial materials help children classify and organize their sensory experiences—distinguishing differences in colour, size, shape, weight, texture, temperature, taste, and sound. Through working with materials like the pink tower, the brown stair, and the colour tablets, children build the cognitive frameworks needed for mathematical and scientific thinking. Many parents are amazed at how their young children learn vocabulary like “rectangular prism” and “isosceles triangle” through hands-on exploration in our classrooms.
Language
Maria Montessori identified ages 2 to 3 as a sensitive period for language, a time when children absorb vocabulary and language patterns with remarkable ease. Our Montessori language program begins with enriching vocabulary through conversation and storytelling, then introduces the phonetic alphabet using sandpaper letters—a tactile approach that engages sight, sound, and touch simultaneously. Children progress from letter recognition to reading and writing at their own pace, supported by the indirect preparation they receive in practical life and sensorial work.
Mathematics
Children have what Montessori called a “mathematical mind”—a natural tendency to classify, order, and quantify. Our math curriculum moves from concrete, hands-on materials to abstract concepts. Children do not simply memorize the symbol for the number 1000; they hold the corresponding quantity of beads in their hands. Through activities involving the golden beads, the stamp game, and the bead frame, children explore addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division long before entering grade school. This foundation in early childhood mathematics gives our graduates a genuine understanding of numerical concepts.
Culture
The culture area encompasses geography, botany, zoology, music, and the celebration of global traditions. Children learn about the continents, countries, flags, and peoples of the world using puzzle maps and other hands-on materials. At Montessori for Children, we celebrate cultural holidays and holy days from traditions around the world, helping children develop an appreciation for the diversity of our multicultural Toronto community.
Daily French Language Instruction
Our French language program is a distinguishing feature of Montessori for Children in Toronto. A native French speaker from France, who has been with our school for over 20 years, provides daily instruction through one-on-one and group lessons. Children begin by learning vocabulary and progress to forming phrases and sentences. A lively French music program reinforces language acquisition, and children perform French songs at our biannual concerts. Parents have noted that their children leave MFC speaking more French than some peers enrolled in formal French immersion programs.
Why Choose a Montessori Education for Your Child in Toronto?
Parents in Toronto have many options for early childhood education, from traditional daycare centres to various preschool philosophies. The Montessori approach stands apart for several reasons that are supported by decades of educational research and the real-world outcomes of Montessori graduates:
Self-directed learning at the child’s own pace. In a Montessori classroom, children are not required to move through lessons at the same speed as their peers. Each child chooses their work, spends as much time as they need with a material, and moves on when they are ready. This approach builds deep understanding rather than surface-level memorization and fosters genuine confidence in each child’s abilities.
A non-competitive, respectful environment. Because children work individually with materials, their progress is never compared to that of other children. This eliminates the anxiety and self-doubt that can arise in competitive settings and instead nurtures intrinsic motivation—a love of learning for its own sake.
Development of independence and executive function. Montessori children learn to make choices, manage their time, complete multi-step tasks, and solve problems independently. These executive function skills are among the strongest predictors of academic and life success, and research shows that Montessori-educated children develop them earlier and more robustly than their peers in conventional programs.
Preparation that lasts beyond preschool. Graduates of our Toronto Montessori program consistently enter grade one with strong reading, writing, and math skills, along with the social confidence and self-regulation needed to thrive in any school environment. Parents frequently tell us that the foundation their children received at MFC continues to benefit them years later.
